Circular systems for energy-efficient building

Verl, September 2024. Sustainability is an integral part of the corporate philosophy of heroal - Johann Henkenjohann GmbH & Co. KG. At Batimat 2024, the family-run company will provide an insight into how it contributes to energy-efficient buildings in residential and commercial construction.

Insight into heroal's sustainability interests at Batimat 2024

Based on the vision ‘spaces for life’, heroal pursues the goal of helping to improve the buildings of today and tomorrow with its high-quality aluminium system solutions for the building shell, and interior and exterior spaces. The company achieves this through system solutions that are characterised by greater security, comfort, the highest standards of design, architectural freedom and sustainability. heroal has set itself ambitious goals, particularly in the area of sustainability, which affect the entire product and production cycle as well as the company's business activities.

High-quality system solutions made from low-emission aluminium

Emissions from the building sector and building use are responsible for around a third of CO2 emissions. heroal already relies on recycled aluminium and is a member of A|U|F e.V., which is committed to a closed and resource-conserving recycling cycle for aluminium. In order to create buildings with an optimised CO2 balance, heroal will also be offering a range of low-emission aluminium in 2025. This will give architects and fabricators the opportunity to minimise the CO2 emissions of the products used in the building shell and meet the high requirements for climate targets in the building sector.

Achieving building certifications with circular systems

heroal aluminium system solutions have a significant impact on the building shell and sustainable building methods. Due to their outstanding durability, they remain in a building for decades until they are finally recycled with as little loss of quality as possible and broken down into their components to be fed into the material cycle in order to manufacture new products from the materials. As proof of the use of environmentally safe, healthy and recyclable materials, 36 heroal aluminium systems from the areas of windows, doors, curtain walls, lifting-sliding doors and fire protection are Cradle to Cradle Certified®. This internationally recognised certification attests to the sustainability of products throughout the entire product life cycle. Among other things, it considers the safe and potentially infinite circulation of materials in cycles and serves as a verification document for many green building standards such as LEED, BREEAM, DGNB or WELL.

Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and the Environmental and Health Declaration (Fiche de Déclaration Environnementale et Sanitaire, FDES), which applies to the French market, were created to assess the energy and resource consumption of a building product and its emissions into the environment over the entire product life cycle - i.e. from the extraction of raw materials through manufacture and use to disposal/recycling. They are also available for heroal systems and support fabricators and architects in making a valuable contribution to the sustainability of buildings with heroal solutions.

Sustainable supply chain

heroal also focusses on sustainability and responsibility in the supply chain. When it comes to procurement, the company focuses on local suppliers with a low CO2 footprint. State-of-the-art production facilities that minimise energy consumption are used in the manufacture of heroal system solutions. Energy from a combined heat and power plant and electricity from 100% hydropower is used to produce the aluminium profiles. Water consumption in production is reduced to a minimum, as is the consumption of packaging materials and the generation of chemical waste. heroal systems are delivered throughout Europe using the company's own modern fleet of lorries.

Responsible acting

As a family business that has existed since 1874, heroal stands for consistency - also in terms of its business relationships. In many cases, partnerships with customers have existed for decades and are characterised by a constructive and trusting exchange. As an employer with regional roots, heroal also supports local foundations, aid organisations and cultural events as well as schools and sports clubs.
